Democrats Held The First Debate for 2020

The Democratic Presidential Debates took place from June 26th-June 27th. The events were hosted at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida. These were the first debates for Democratic Presidential hopefuls to speak on major issues and policies that they stand for. NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo hosted live coverage on night one (June 26th) and night two (June 27th).

The two-night event had 10 candidates each night. Night one had candidates Bill de Blasio, Tim Ryan, Julián Castro, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard, Jay Inslee, and John Delaney.

Night two featured candidates Marianne Williamson, John Hickenlooper, Andrew Yang, Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Michael Bennet, and Eric Swalwell.

For the candidates to take part in the first two debates they needed to have polled at 1 percent in at least three surveys or receive donations from 65,000 people across various states.

A noticeable difference with the 20-candidates was the diversity among them. There were six female candidates, six people of color including African-American, Mexican-American, and Asian-American and an openly LGBTQ candidate in the 20-candidate lineup.

With the diversity among the candidates, the conversation went deeper to note how policies affect each gender and all races. The main topics of discussion included the economy, health care, immigration, gun control, climate change, and foreign policy.

After the debates, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, and Castro came out as the surprise candidates to take the spotlight during night one and night two. Some of the most memorable quotes from the candidates included:

Pete Buttigieg, “We got to talk about one other thing, cause the Republican party likes to cloak itself in the language of religion. Now, our party doesn’t talk about that as much largely for a very good reason which was, we are committed to the separation of church and state and we stand for people of any religion and people of no religion, but we should call hypocrisy when we see it. And for a party that associates with Christianity to say it is okay to suggest that God would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents that god would condone putting children in cages has lost all claim to ever use religious language again.”

Julián Castro, “On Day 1, I would do that executive order that would address metering, and then I would follow that up in my first 100 days with immigration reform that would honor asylum claims, that would put undocumented immigrants — as long as they haven’t committed a serious crime — on a pathway to citizenship.”

Elizabeth Warren, “I would make certain that every woman has access to the full range of reproductive health care services, and that includes birth control, it includes abortion, it includes everything for a woman. And I want to add on that. It’s not enough for us to expect the courts to protect us. Forty-seven years ago, Roe v. Wade was decided, and we’ve looked to the courts all that time as state after state has undermined Roe, has put in exceptions, has come right up to the edge of taking away protection. We have now an America where most people support Roe v. Wade. We need to make that federal law.”

Kamala Harris, “As the only African-American on stage, I would like to speak and I’m going to now direct this at Vice President Biden. I do not believe you are a racist. And I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground, but I also believe — and it is personal, and it was actually very hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputation and career on the segregation of race in this country. And it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing. And you know, there was a little girl in California who was a part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”
